How to feed snails at home. What do snails eat, how and what to feed them? What should you not give to gastropods? What not to feed snails

Land gastropod mollusk from the subclass of pulmonate snails. Widely distributed in countries with tropical climates, it is a highly invasive species and is a pest of agricultural plants, especially sugar cane. Currently, further expansion of the Achatina range has been stopped due to strict quarantine measures. An ongoing snail infestation in the United States was prevented. In Europe, including Russia, where Achatina survival in nature is impossible, they are often kept as pets.

A terrarium for Achatina can be made from a simple aquarium. The minimum size is 10 liters per snail. The larger the aquarium, the larger your snail will grow. The terrarium must have a lid, because snails can crawl out of it. It is advisable to arrange small holes in the lid for better gas exchange. As a last resort, you can simply lift the lid to create a small gap. You need to put bedding on the bottom of the aquarium. The bedding can be Begonia soil, or ideally a coconut substrate 5-7 cm thick. You can build a small bath with fresh water; Achatina loves to swim. The main thing is that the depth of the bath does not allow the snail to choke. In general, Achatina crawl well under water, but if it accidentally falls into the bath from above, a small snail can drown from fright. You also need to make sure that the bath does not turn over if the snail starts to burrow into the soil next to it, otherwise the water will spread out, which is not good.

The temperature and humidity required by Achatina are approximately the same as those in an ordinary city apartment. Soil moisture is determined empirically. If the snails sit on the walls of the terrarium all the time, it means there is too much water. If they prefer to be sealed (the evidence is hidden in the sink and closed with a lid), on the contrary, it is too dry. When the soil moisture is normal, snails crawl along its surface at night and often burrow into it during the day. To maintain humidity, it is enough to spray the soil and walls of the terrarium with a spray bottle twice a day.

To awaken a clogged snail, you can pour water over its mouth and carefully remove the cap, or simply place it in a terrarium with normal humidity. It is recommended to wash the terrarium at least once a week. The exception is a terrarium with a clutch of eggs, which must be cleaned without water so as not to change the humidity and not damage the clutch.

It is better to keep small snails without soil, covering them with cabbage or lettuce leaves, thereby increasing the chance of the snail finding food and making it easier to care for the terrarium.

Feeding the Achatina snail

It is better to feed as food is eaten and dried and remove any leftovers. Achatina eats vegetables, fruits and herbs, but in nature they do not refuse meat. Usually in captivity they are fed cabbage, carrots and cucumbers, but it is preferable to give them a more varied diet. This is necessary first of all so that at any moment you can switch to another available type of food. It is known that snails have certain food preferences, including many who prefer cucumbers and lettuce to other foods and, if they are fed only cucumbers from childhood, they often refuse to eat anything other than them, which can cause some inconvenience. Large snails can be given whole cores; they process food waste surprisingly quickly. Soft foods should be given only for a short period of time, otherwise they will flow and spread across the soil, causing it to become contaminated. It is generally not recommended to give soft foods to small snails. There was a case when snails buried themselves entirely in a banana and suffocated there. It is better to give very small newborn snails greens, grated carrots, and after a few days lettuce and an apple.

Can:

Fruits: apple, apricots, pineapple, avocado, bananas, pear, wild strawberry, strawberry, cherry, mango, papaya, plum, bunch of grapes, fig, watermelon, melon.

Vegetables: pumpkin, rutabaga, zucchini, broccoli, champignons, lettuce, cucumber, potatoes (boiled), carotel carrots, red peppers, celery, spinach, tomato, cabbage leaves.

Beans, peas (cooked or fresh), oatmeal.

Other: mushrooms, meadow plants/trees, nettles, daisy flowers, elder flowers, clover, dandelion, plantain, yarrow, sprouted oats, alfalfa, fruit tree blossoms (apple, apricot, peach...), bread (softened), milk (powdered) or natural), dairy/lactic acid products (without sugar, salt, spices), minced meat (minced meat, raw or boiled meat), egg (boiled), compound feed, meat and bone meal, peanuts (chopped), vegetable and meat baby food, gammarus.

It is important that the plants are not picked within the city, factories or enterprises, wastewater, or landfills. After you bring it home, rinse thoroughly in warm water!

You can’t (very important!):

Spicy, salty, sour, sweet, smoked, fried, pasta, potato eyes.

Effect of calcium on shellfish

Snails need calcium to build their shells. Calcium is a very common chemical element.

Lack of calcium in the snail's diet leads to curvature and deformation of the shell. The snail shell becomes softer due to lack of calcium; it is not protected from the environment. Since all internal organs are attached to the walls of the shell, any damage to it can lead to improper functioning of the organs or death. A mollusk that does not receive calcium from food, as a rule, lags behind in development: shell growth is disrupted or stops altogether, and puberty fails.

In order to prove how important calcium is for snails, I conducted an experiment.

Two groups of snails of the same age and species were taken and placed in the same conditions, but they were fed differently: some with food with added calcium, others with its complete absence.

Soon the snails of the second group stopped growing. It follows from this that calcium is indispensable for mollusks.

Breeding the Achatina snail (Reproduction of Achatina snails)

Snails are hermaphrodites, meaning each individual has both male and female reproductive organs. In the absence of a partner, self-fertilization is possible, but it is quite rare.

The snail can store sperm for two years after mating, using it to fertilize maturing eggs. The number of eggs in a clutch is about 200 (in some cases up to 500); the snail can lay 5-6 clutches annually. The size of one egg is 4.5-5.5 mm, its shape resembles that of a chicken. Egg development is possible at temperatures from 22°C and lasts from several hours to 17 days.

Hello, I bought turtle food at the pet store with minerals to strengthen the shell. I read the ingredients and I doubted it. Here is the composition: gammarus, granules containing shrimp meal, seaweed, fish meal, wheat flour, soy protein, mollusk shells, tubifex, vitamin and mineral complex. Do you think it is possible to feed Achatina snails?

What to feed land snails?

In principle, the range of permitted products is quite wide. Snails should be fed greens, vegetables and fruits. It is necessary to ensure that your diet is varied and balanced! From greens, you can offer the snail dandelions, clover, alfalfa, lettuce, parsley, plantain, and nettle. Among vegetables, you can give preference to cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, white cabbage, pumpkin, carrots, and spinach. But most of all, land snails love fruits. These can be either ordinary fruits, such as apples, pears, apricots, cherries, or exotic ones - avocado, mango, pineapple.

What to feed aquarium snails?

Aquarium snails, like land snails, are not particularly picky about food.. If soft algae grows in your aquarium, remove it immediately, otherwise your snail will simply break it. Aquarium snails feed exclusively on solid algae. But to prevent your snail from eating all the algae in the aquarium, feed it with cucumbers, cabbage, spinach, and carrots. In general, aquarium snails are omnivores; they can eat leftover fish food, clearing the aquarium of rotting food debris.

What to feed the Achatina snail (African snail)?

Because Achatina snails are terrestrial, then their diet is the same. Just keep in mind that Achatina snails are very large. And in their homeland, they are generally considered terrible pests that eat the entire sugar cane crop.

The most preferred foods of Achatina snails are lettuce, cucumber and apple. It must be remembered that any snails should never be salted, fried or spicy!

What to feed baby snails?

The answer to this question is extremely simple! Everything is the same as for adult snails. Only babies need to grind fruits and vegetables. The best place to start is with carrots and green leaves. You should be careful when giving bananas to babies, only in the form of finely chopped pieces, otherwise they may simply suffocate in it!

The giant Achatina snails are a whole group of the largest land mollusks on Earth, and only specialists can distinguish all representatives belonging to the genus Achatina. As a rule, lovers of such unusual and exotic pets do not attach much importance to their specific characteristics, since the rules for caring for all Ashatina mollusks do not differ too much.

The main diet of the Achatina snail

Absolutely all Achatina are almost omnivores. The feeding process of such a giant mollusk is carried out through a “tongue”, which is seated with peculiar horny spines. In natural conditions, they feed on rotting vegetation and carrion, mushrooms and algae, lichens and citrus bark.

The diet of representatives of the genus Ashatina includes more than five hundred different types of vegetation, including vegetables and legumes, pumpkin and melon, salad plants, potatoes and onions, sunflowers and eucalyptus.

This is interesting! In America, such snails are considered a real national disaster, due to their very rapid reproduction and the ability to devour almost everything that gets in their way, including tree bark, any crops, as well as plaster on buildings, so people involved in breeding Achatina in the United States are at risk real prison sentence.

As observations show, the food preferences of the giant mollusk change quite noticeably with age, so young individuals give preference to living plants, and older Achatina eat almost any rotting vegetation with great pleasure. In order to build a strong shell, even the youngest Achatina willingly scrape particles from calcareous rocks and shells of dead mollusks, and also eat crushed eggshells.

What can you feed a snail?

The basis of a complete diet for the domestic Achatina snail can be represented by lettuce leaves, a variety of natural greens, as well as shoots of cereals and vegetables, including beet or carrot tops. Many land giant clams love fresh Chinese cabbage.

Important! The owner of such an original pet must be prepared for some capriciousness of the Achatina snail in terms of nutrition, so the owner will most likely have to adapt to the “original” taste preferences of his mollusk.

Also, it is very important to include cucumbers and tomatoes, zucchini and pumpkin, carrots and spinach, young corn on the cob, cabbage and peas in the main diet of an unusual pet. Achatina react positively to some fruits and berries, which can be represented by apples and pears, watermelons and melons, bananas and mangoes, apricots and plums, avocados and pineapples, as well as cherries, strawberries and raspberries.

The following foods are extremely beneficial for land mollusks:

  • dill and parsley;
  • lettuce and spinach;
  • nettle and dandelion;
  • clover and plantain;
  • chamomile and burdock;
  • corn and barley grits;
  • pearl barley and rolled oats;
  • rice and buckwheat;
  • lentils and flaxseeds;
  • sunflower and sesame;

It is advisable to cut soft vegetables, fruits and berries into not too large slices. It is advisable to feed food products that are too hard to the giant clam in pureed form, first grinding it on a regular grater or in a kitchen blender.

Important! Experts and experienced breeders advise supplementing the Achatina diet with birch and oak, raspberry and apple leaves, linden leaves, as well as freshly squeezed pumpkin, carrot or peach-pear juices.

It is important to remember that any food given to your pet must be fresh and at room temperature that is comfortable for the snail.

What is forbidden to give

  • spicy and pickled, as well as smoked products;
  • any sweets, including sugar;
  • salt in any form;
  • lemons and oranges, which contain natural acids that help break down shellfish;
  • gooseberries and currants, quince and viburnum, cranberries and sloe, as well as cherry plum;
  • vegetable crops from the nightshade family, including unripe tomatoes, eggplants and “green” potatoes;
  • pork and beef, fatty lamb;
  • cream and sour cream;
  • flour and any flour products, and especially pasta, which can cause intestinal obstruction in a giant snail and subsequent death of the pet.

It should be noted that sorrel and wormwood, ragweed and ginger, radishes and radishes, onions and garlic, and hot peppers are also completely prohibited.

Important!

Snail feeding mode

It is advisable to feed your domestic snail in the evening, since such giant mollusks belong to the category of nocturnal creatures, showing increased activity in the evening and at night. It is enough to feed adult snails once a day, but the youngest snails need unhindered, round-the-clock access to food.

It is strictly forbidden to place snail food directly on the lining substrate. Food should be given in a special small bowl or tray. Many owners of land snails prefer to use a regular lettuce leaf as a “plate”.

If in the summer the snail's diet is very rich due to a large amount of greens, fruits and vegetables, then with the onset of winter the supply of vitamins to the body of the land mollusk is noticeably reduced. In winter, you can feed Achatina snails with carrots and cabbage, beets and pumpkin.

Important! You cannot use calcium gluconate and calcium D-3 as a supplement or supplement to the diet, and you cannot feed the snail with dog or cat food, fruit and candied berries.

And also bananas and apples, which are chopped and added to not too fatty cottage cheese. Also, veterinary stores sell special food flakes for vegetarian fish, which are very suitable for land mollusks.

Some owners of Achatina snails grow various green crops in pots on the windowsill in winter. Among other things, currently the range of products in stores in summer and winter has practically no significant differences.

This makes it easy to provide the mollusk with the proper food ration. Vegetables, as well as herbs, fruits and berries, must first be thoroughly washed to remove nitrates and pesticides, which are a deadly threat to an exotic pet.

Vitamins and minerals

Protein supplements of animal and plant origin should be mandatory in the diet of a giant clam, but the second option is more preferable. Strong protein mixtures are given to Achatina no more than a couple of times a week, and the snail’s daily diet necessarily includes highly nutritious plant mixtures based on foliage, a small amount of cereals and lichens. Animal protein can be given to Achatina about three times a week.

High-quality mandatory supplements can be presented:

  • cuttlefish shell;
  • feed chalk;
  • shell rock;
  • eggshell;
  • Daphnia and Gammarus.

When choosing a source of animal proteins, it is advisable to give preference to chicken or turkey meat, shrimp and squid, mussels, as well as dietary rabbit meat.

Achatina snail's need for water

Adult Achatina snails not only actively drink clean water, but also need water treatments. A bathhouse for a giant land mollusk can be represented by any wide and flat vessel of small depth. In such a bath, your pet will be able to refresh itself regularly, since the secretion of a sufficient amount of protective mucus directly depends on the amount of incoming moisture. Of course, a slight lack of moisture does not cause the death of a pet, but in this case the mollusk goes into characteristic hibernation.

But for young Achatina, which are small in size, bodies of water that are too deep can pose a serious danger. Along with many terrestrial animals, snails of this type breathe with their lungs, and therefore, when immersed in water, the death of the young occurs quickly.

This is interesting! Gastropods need not only drinking water, but also sufficiently high levels of air humidity, which can be created by spraying the walls of the snail’s home with a spray bottle.

To provide the young animals with enough moisture to drink, it is recommended to place in the terrarium a not too large piece of food-grade plastic, onto which clean drinking water is regularly sprayed using a household spray bottle. Among other things, young snails are able to obtain a significant amount of water by eating greens, juicy vegetables and fruits.

At the moment, many owners prefer to have exotic animals: monkeys, crocodiles, tarantulas and of course snails. Unfortunately, not many people who have these wonderful pets know how to keep and what to feed a snail.

The snail is one of the most unpretentious pets. But still, there are a number of tips that you need to follow in order to properly feed your pet, making him active, cheerful and healthy.

What do snails eat?

All snails, be it water snails, grape snails or the huge Achatina, must have vegetable protein in their diet. These are vegetables and fruits, legumes, which can be easily purchased at the nearest market or vegetable shop.

These wonderful creatures feed three times every seven days. They do not eat everything at once, storing it, but little by little and at several times. They need to be fed in the evening, because snails are mostly nocturnal animals.

It is strictly forbidden to give hot seasonings or crackers; fried foods; sweets and salt; Newsprint with prints should be removed from the route, since printing ink applied to the paper is very poisonous to snails. Poison for this animal is also citrus fruits, which, due to their high acidity, burn the mucous membranes and internal organs of the snail. Don’t forget to rinse bowls with boiling water every day after eating. The weathered food is removed so that the snails do not get poisoned.
Clean drinking water must be available at all times. They not only drink it, but also use it to secrete mucus in the body.

Vegetables and fruits in the snail's diet

The snail happily eats raw carrots, grated or chopped cucumbers, zucchini, and cabbage. But it is better to boil starchy potatoes before giving them to your pet. Greens are good for animals. With pleasure they eat dill, lettuce, grape leaves, and parsley. These mysterious creatures love to eat pears, peaches, kiwis and bananas. You can pick them garden strawberries or wild strawberries, they will taste them with pleasure.

For land-dwelling pets, cereals and various grain mixtures will be of interest in their diet. Rice cereal, oatmeal, corn, peas - everything will be used. Snails will happily eat both peanuts and pumpkin seeds. And some will not give up aromatic champignons at all.

This slow-moving pet also loves exotic fruits: papaya, mango, avocado. He will be happy with sweet pieces of melon, and will happily eat a couple of grapes.

Calcium and vitamins

Snails need vitamins and macroelements no less than other animals. You should add cottage cheese, chalk or bone to the snail's diet; they contain calcium, which is needed for the formation of the shell. Chicken egg shells can also be used for the same purposes, but they should first be crushed into powder.

Diet of aquarium snails

These animals eat plants that are found in bodies of water and happily consume the remains of fish. They can eat bloodworms, which a caring owner will first grind into a powder. It is customary to give such snails food for aquarium fish based on crushed algae. To prevent snails from eating all the greens in your aquarium, feed them fresh vegetables and fruits.

Pets are happy to remove organic deposits from the walls of the aquarium, share food with other inhabitants of the home, they love algae and chopped greens. Usually, many snails are not placed in one aquarium because they gnaw all the green spaces. Aquarium snails are kind of orderlies, absorbing decaying and dying green spaces.

If you raise these beautiful animals naturally in a pond or other body of water, you can pamper them with freshly picked garden herbs, such as sorrel or dandelions. In winter, you can please the snails with the same freshly frozen delicacy prepared at your summer cottage.

When a snail was born in the house

Such pets are not fed at first; it is enough for them to feast on the shell of their egg. This is genetically inherent in them by nature. Newborn animals need to be fed with apples or grated carrots, you can chop greens.

Aquarium snails also eat soft pieces of algae or leftover fish food. The ideal solution is to place young and adult individuals in different compartments and feed according to age. Until the snails reach 14 days, you can give them fish food.

Undoubtedly, you need to take a closer look at the tastes and appetites of your exotic pets, but remember about the nutritional balance of the snail. If she is hungry, then the greenery around her will be gnawed, and if she eats too much, she will grow too quickly and bear offspring.

“What to feed snails?” - this question is certainly of interest to a huge number of people who are interested in breeding these funny creatures. There are many types of snails you can breed at home. Most often, houses contain giant African Achatina. They attract shellfish lovers with their large size and unpretentious disposition.

Why is food so important?

Before you keep this or that type of snail at home, it is important to find out from professionals what and when you can feed them.

If gastropods eat incorrectly, this can have a very negative impact on their health.

Land snails are fed mainly with plant foods. Experts recommend using only biologically natural plant foods. If fruits or vegetables are bought in stores, it is advisable to wash them thoroughly.

It's no secret that store-bought products are often susceptible to chemical treatment. This leads to a very important rule: food for shellfish should be pure and without any harmful additives.

Few people know, but for normal growth and development of mollusks it is sometimes necessary to feed them with animal protein. It is better to consult a specialist about this.

Food for Achatina

As mentioned above, the Achatina snail is currently very popular among shellfish lovers. These cute creatures usually reach a length of about 25 cm.

It should be noted that this pet can be called unpretentious without exaggeration.

If the mollusk wakes up every day, then it needs to be fed daily, if every other day, then every other day. It is better to give food in the evening, because these gastropods are nocturnal creatures that sleep peacefully during the day.

When feeding Achatina snails at home, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • This type of snail loves fruits, vegetables and herbs. They can happily eat almost anything - plantain leaves, dandelion flowers, clover. They will not refuse mushrooms and various cereals. Achatina is often fed with carrots, cucumbers, and cabbage leaves. An interesting fact is that very often they have taste preferences. So, for example, if Achatina is fed only cucumbers from birth, then later they will most likely refuse other food. This can bring a lot of inconvenience, because for the normal functioning of any living organism, a variety of food is needed;
  • Achatina very quickly process food waste, so they can be given large stubs without fear. It is better to give soft food for a short time, as they heavily pollute the soil;
  • It is not advisable to feed domestic Achatina meat;
  • It is better not to feed large portions of soft food to very young babies. It happened that a hungry baby completely buried himself in a large piece of banana and suffocated there. At first, it is better to give baby Achatina only greens and very thinly sliced carrots. A little later they can be fed with apples and salad.

In addition to the main food, such snails must be given calcium-containing foods at home. This component is very important for the construction of a mollusk shell. There is quite a lot of calcium in eggshells (it must first be thoroughly crushed), feed chalk, cuttlefish shell, and meat and bone meal. It is also important that the snails receive protein (buckwheat, millet, gammarus, daphnia).

Achatina should be given water every time after feeding. For these purposes, you should irrigate the terrarium with a sprayer. These gastropods love to lick droplets from its surface.

Food for aquarium inhabitants

Those who have an aquarium with snails at home should know the answer to a very important question: “What to feed aquarium snails?”. It should be noted that there is nothing complicated in feeding this type of mollusk. Most often these snails are fed greens.

Various plants and algae should be placed in the aquarium, and as they disappear, food should be added. Also, such pets can be fed with bloodworms, daphnia, finely chopped lettuce and meat. The meat must first be ground to a powder consistency.

Some ignorant owners at home like to feed their aquarium pets bread crumbs. Experts do not advise doing this. The thing is that such food is very large, so the snail often cannot grab it.

Besides, bread crumbs are very rough food.

Snail food

The grape snail is quite easy to keep in captivity. This mollusk loves to feast on the following foods: barley, artichokes, apples, carrots, dandelions, lettuce, leeks, nettles, nasturtium. These pets also love grape leaves, bell peppers, buckwheat porridge and various berries.

For those who are interested in knowing what to feed a grape snail at home, you need to remember that this type of mollusk also needs calcium. Currently, in any specialized store you can purchase tablets with this component, which can simply be placed on the soil in the aquarium.
